Suppose you want to record material on a CD‐ROM for use in your own organisation, or for distribution to others. There are services that handle the ‘mastering’ or recording process. Generally they work from material recorded on tapes or floppy disks. However, it is important to recognise that organising and putting together very large files for placement on CD‐ROMs (the process is called premastering) can be a complex procedure. If the organisation is not done properly, the final disks may be less than useful. To get an idea of what is involved, let us take a look at the offerings of two vendors that supply software and Hardwarefor CD‐ROM creation and use.
