Family History OnDisc brings together Australia’s leading databases on family history. It is a new information resource for genealogists, family historians, and researchers. The information in this product comes from daily newspaper articles, explorers’ journals, national news journals, and secondary sources such as books, journal articles, and biographical dictionaries. The following information resources have been combined in this product:

  • The Australian Historic Records Register (AHRR), a list of paper‐based records held in private hands in Australia such as diaries, financial records, sketches, catalogs, registers, letters, photographs, posters, recipe books, and minute books;

  • The Australian Chronicles: An Index to Sources of Australian Biography (CHRONICLES), which is a biographical database;

  • The Military History Listing (MIHILIST), a database on military biographies and other information on the military in Australia;

  • A Chronology of Australian Historic & Current Events (AUSCHRON), a listing of significant events in Australian history;

  • Museums Studies Bibliography (MUSEUMS), information on museums and museum exhibitions in Australia; and

  • Memorials Database (MEMLS), information on memorials to persons and events in South Eastern Australia.

This product uses the WinSPIRS search software. The user can search across all of the databases, print and save records, or search using the Index Search. There is also a very useful Help menu as well as Getting Started training exercises. Loading instructions for the WinSPIRS 2.1, PC‐SPIRS 3.4, or MacSPIRS 2.4 software are given. This product is well constructed and easy to use. It provides a wealth of information for anyone researching family history and genealogy in Australia.
