The Marine Biology Web is highly useful for students from high school to undergraduate level. The pages have a nice mix of marine biology subject matter along with links to educational opportunities within the field.
The subject matter pages are understandably limited, as the pages are probably not meant to be comprehensive. The “Marine Biology Links” and “Glossary of Marine Biology” links are helpful; and the “MBREF: Marine Biology Reference” link leads to a subject indexed bibliography of articles on a wide range of marine biology related topics contributed by various experts. Often the references will be further categorized by headings like: summary, classics, recent contributions, and controversial. The range of general topics includes biological oceanography and the more species focused marine biology field.
The educational opportunity resources are links to marine science programs from various colleges, internships and summer courses, and marine labs. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography site http://scilib.ucsd.edu/ sio/net.html is more comprehensive but, because of its size, may not be the best starting point for a high school student looking into marine biology as a career.
The only criticism I have is that most of the links open a separate browser window at least on the two mainstream web browsers on the market. Thus, the back and forward functions are useless. Otherwise, this is a very nice resource.
