The new Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool, can claim to be the first in Britain to break completely with traditional cathedral architecture. Using advanced techniques and modern materials it has been built to last a minimum of 500 years, and a record of its construction is given in A Cathedral in Our time (col, 20 min). Commissioned in 1961 by Lowe & Rodin, the consulting engineers, the film does more than simply explain how Sir Frederick Gibberd's unique design was interpreted — it also shows the very human story of the clergy and all those involved in the project.
