Most booths in use today are fixed installations that cannot be moved — or at least not easily — once installed. Most have a transparent front panel facing the teacher (or the back of the student in front). The booths' functions are three‐fold: sound‐insulation from booth to booth, protection of microphone from unwanted room noise within the booth, and the psychological isolation or privacy of the student. A variety of interesting designs are being offered, however, and it must not be thought that a folding or portable or collapsible booth is inferior. Indeed, many of the problems arising when layout is being considered can find a satisfactory solution if the possibility of a non‐fixed booth design is taken into account.
