Streaming in schools is becoming a burning topic and the recently published Gittins Report on Primary Education in Wales has added some fuel to the fire. Although streaming by ability is not very old, arising as it did from the old standards system, some schools began to discard it quite a long time ago. I recall visting one such school in Huddersfield some fifteen years ago; its happy atmosphere and sense of worthwhile activity are still fresh in my mind. Nevertheless, the effects of the 11 plus selection examination and the slowness with which the results of educational research tend to percolate to the bulk of the teaching profession have operated to support streaming by ability.
