For MacDonald read Short. The present Secretary of State has over the past few months defended as well as possible the slashing financial attack made by the Government on educational expenditure. Apart from the serious error of accusing AEC leader Sir William Alexander of talking nonsense, Mr Short has avoided much of the troubles of his two predecessors. What matters is the way in which he has done so.
