Possibly the simplest definition of technology is that it is the use of science in manufacturing things. This has a significant implication in respect of universities and schools. It is that we can train people as scientists but that they become technologists by virtue of what they do. This point is overlooked by many, who argue as though we could train people in technology and that technologists and scientists are two distinct breeds of people. What we really mean when we say that a man is trained in technology is that he has been taught to appreciate his role as a technologist.
