In its decision that the district councils will be the education authorities in the conurbations outside London the government has ignored authoritative educational opinion (including that of its civil servants) and has blatantly sacrificed education to petty local politics. Like Mr George Taylor who has fired a broadside at the government with superb timing and accuracy, I am astonished that educationalists are taking it so quietly. If he is right in attributing their acquiescence to their professional need to toady up to future employers then perhaps the teaching profession deserves all that is coming, but this is hardly to their pupils' and students' advantage.
