Computers are extemely useful tools but they are only as good as the people who control them. At present they are not realising their commercial and industrial potential because of the lack of proper education. There is a yawning gap in the training of many professional and managerial staff which leaves them ignorant and apprehensive of computers and advanced computer based methods. This gap exists both with experienced staff and, regrettably, with newly qualified graduates and trainees. Added to this there is a communications gap between computer specialists and non‐specialists, neither side being completely aware of the problems facing the other and each speaking a different language.
