Continuing Education is a term currently used to describe fields of vocational and non‐vocational adult education, activities of extra‐mural departments, and up‐dating courses offered by professional institutions. For the purpose of this argument continuing education is identified in the more restricted sense as mid‐career education of a vocational nature. The theme is that this is a field which could become a particular characteristic of the polytechnics and one which they are specially suited to develop. In this sense it is true to say that there is already significant activity of this type in many polytechnics, particularly in departments of management and usually in the form of short course provision. Often, however, this form of educational activity is offered as and when resources permit, not as a well‐identified part of the educational activity of the institution.
