Many Western nations are moving towards a post‐industrial society; what form this will take it is too early to tell. Meanwhile, they face a paradoxical state of affairs. Witness the growth of unemployment which is creating a new post‐war high in the jobless total. In the UK, for example, the proportion of the work force now unemployed is running in excess of six per cent — a figure which would have been regarded as “politically intolerable” only a few years ago.
