British Institute of Management reports that the situation in relation to education has improved since the Department of Industry Industry, Education and Management discussion paper was written, and since some of the statistics used in it were issued. Pointing out that education is an investment with a long pay‐off period, it argues that the young people who entered higher education at the beginning of the period of great expansion were only now reaching positions of influence in industry. Recent trends show an increasing demand for industry‐orientated courses, training in industry is at a higher level than ever before, and there are signs of increasing success in the many schemes for bringing about a closer relationship between industry and education.
