The School was established in 1965 by the University of Manchester, following the Franks and Normanbrook Reports, as one of the two new centres of excellence in the field of management education and research. It developed from earlier work in management studies in the University of Manchester. Although constituting the Faculty of Business Administration within the University, it has its own governing body with a great strength derived from business and public affairs as well as from the academic world. In 1971 the School moved into a fine modern building at the heart of the University complex capable of accommodating up to 200 graduate course students, 40 PhD students, and 100 members on post‐experience courses. There are 154 study bedrooms with a wide range of rooms for lectures, seminars, syndicates and social activities. The library has nearly 4,000 volumes on management, business and related subjects, and receives some 750 current journals — a library recognised as one of the finest of its kind in the world. It has its own time‐sharing computer with 16 terminals, and direct access to one of the largest computer installations in the United Kingdom.
