The core of the work of the Counselling section of the Management Services and Industrial Relations Department of South West London College has been to help those people who are already doing some counselling as part of their work to improve these particular skills. This service is offered to professionals and volunteers in educational, medical, social, youth and community work fields. In looking for ways to be more effective in training a wide range of people, we chose the model of self‐directed learning.
