Young people qualified in science or science‐related subjects will find, even in an uncertain economic climate, demand for their skills. The revised edition of the Department of Education & Science booklet Science at Work looks at the post‐school courses and career opportunities available in this field, emphasising the value of such courses both to girls and boys. The booklet, in the Choose Your Course series, stresses how important it is that girls reject the belief that careers in science and technology are mainly for boys, and points out that there is a huge range of potentially satisfying career opportunities for girls. Not only do science qualifications have direct relevance for many careers including the expanding area of microelectronics but, as applications of science spread, employees who have studied some science are becoming increasingly useful in areas with no direct science connection. The booklet gives a brief insight into a number of jobs including information work, librarianship, microelectronics, research and teaching, outlines the courses available at different ability ranges from City & Guilds to degree level and beyond, and gives details of where to obtain further information.
