Although competition for full‐time places in higher education will be tougher in future, the total available will still be very large, advises the author of a recent guide Higher Education — Finding Your Way (HMSO, London 32pp, 50p). It has been revised and expanded since first publication in 1979, and covers degree courses and their alternatives, pros and cons of sandwich courses, organisation of courses, how to apply, social issues to consider in applying, interviews and visits, grants and emergency procedures. The author poses the question: Do you want higher education because you really feel you will benefit from it — or are you drifting towards it in response to the expectations of your parents and friends? Higher education is most uncomfortable and unsatisfying for those who have little interest in the subject they have chosen to study, nor is it a sound step to enter higher education solely on the grounds of deferring a choice of job or career.
