The Open University held its annual national press conference in London at the end of January and paraded a selection of 5,232 graduates for the current year. 12 per cent of these are in the professions and arts, while 10 per cent are technicians. Teachers — originally in a large majority — now make up less than one‐third, but are still the largest occupational group. 2,513 (48 per cent) are women; in fact 18 per cent are housewives, although we have always taken strong exception to the term — wives are married (or should be) to their husbands, and not to their houses.
