CEDEFOP News, published by the European Centre for Development of Vocational Training, asks: Are entrepreneurs born or are they trained? AnCO, the Irish Industrial Training Authority, has found that training can play a major part in the development of successful entrepreneurs. The Authority became involved as a result of research carried out by Dunn & Bradstreet, who wanted to find out why so many small businesses fail. They discovered that, for a number of reasons, three out of five fail during the first five years. However, one salient fact did emerge — 60 per cent of the collapses were attributable not to the project but to lack of business acumen on the part of the entrepreneur.
