For many thousands of years, since man first discovered fire, the focal point of family life has been the hearth. In recent years, as millions around the world have acquired the television viewing habit, sitting‐room chairs have turned to face the cathode‐ray tube and not the fireplace. In some cases favourite photos of loved ones adorn the top of the set, where once they would have perched on the mantlepiece; thus further reflecting television's role as the social hub of the household.
