LEARNING WITHOUT FRONTIERS

The International Education and Training Exhibition, DIDACTA 88, was held in the halls of the Swiss Industries Fair in Basel under the above theme from 2–6 February. This description accurately reflected an unstoppable trend which is characteristic of the end of the century. Training no longer involves cramming and learning by vote, but has become frontierless learning through understanding. An ever more complex world is challenging young people and adults alike, at the workplace and at home, to engage in continuing and further education. In the industrialised countries learning has long ceased to be a process which ends on leaving school. Continuing and further education courses for adults are enjoying ever‐growing popularity in Switzerland and its neighbouring countries; they are often the gateway to a further step on the professional ladder. Indeed, retraining can open new career opportunities to adults or enable re‐entry into professional life. It is in this manner that today's unemployed are able to find new career openings.
