Technical education might almost be said to be founded on the teaching of practical work. It grew out of the courses provided mainly for artisans in the Mechanics Institutes and similar centres which grew up in the middle of last century. Courses were at first very much concerned with affording craftsmen an opportunity of improving their knowledge of their trade and perhaps improving their status. The testing of these useful arts gave rise to the formation of some of our most respected examining bodies and to qualifications which have remained the currency of skilled status over the years.
