A WELL‐CONDUCTED survey by a man with unusual experience both in education and industry brings out clearly the way in which the status of the clerk has changed over the last few decades. Perhaps inadvertently, J. R. Dale has also pin‐pointed one of the more fundamental reasons for the malaise which affects so such of British industry today.
