Many experienced mathematics teachers are very worried at the present time about ‘modern mathematics’ and its proper place in the school course. They have no wish to be labelled conservative when they stick to traditional syllabuses, particularly as their teaching may well be extremely effective, with their pupils gaining an interest in mathematics that could be life‐long. Their type of course, too, can well produce able young mathematicians who are beginning to acquire the difficult art of translating physical situations into mathematical relations.
