The Government's economy measures to meet the current pressure on the pound, so far as one can elucidate them from the conflicting, vague and incomplete ministerial statements which pass for present policy, are bound to have a depressing influence on educational progress, though fortunately not to anything like the extent as had been feared. The reductions imposed on local government spending are certain to be reflected in building cuts, and doubtless the usual victims, the so‐called slum schools at primary level, will once again suffer hope deferred. The worst casualty, however, worse because largely unmentioned, will be the National Plan with all its brave forecasts of those thousands of additional teachers, floods of day release young men and women, and masses of university students. All gone with the wind of Zurich. Productivity, like wages and prices, also enters the refrigerator.
