Boots has one of the first retailers to introduce a structured and formal work experience programme on a national basis for 15/16‐year‐olds in their last year of compulsory education to have two weeks of work experience before leaving school. Around 4,000 pupils are expected to take part in the scheme each year. It will cover the day‐to‐day operations behind the scenes. Staff will show them the arrival of goods and how they are checked and safely stored; in the sales area they will learn about stock control, information technology, and how to display and merchandise products effectively. Teacher placements are also being introduced at Boots to give them an insight into retailing and business experience, so that business skills can then be given more relevance back in the classsroom.
