Public spending on all levels of education in the various EU member states averages 5.2 per cent of gross domestic product, according to the latest figures from European statistics office, Eurostat.

The highest levels are in Denmark (8 per cent), Sweden (7.8 per cent) and Finland (7.3 per cent). The lowest levels are in Greece, with 2.9 per cent. Britain is exactly in line with the EU average, at 5.2 per cent.

Wages and salaries for teaching and other staff account for the lion's share of the spending ­ at an average of 73 per cent of the total.
