Talks centre on training reform

Keywords: Vocational training, Education, Europe

Ways of reforming vocational education and training in order to respond to labour-market change were discussed at a meeting of the European Training Foundation advisory forum. The meeting finalized the broad lines of a work programme for the foundation. The countries of central and eastern Europe stressed the importance of measures which would help them to prepare for eventual EU membership. The republics of the former Soviet Union highlighted the need to focus on training managers. The Mediterranean countries which are not EU members sought to establish a network among themselves and with the EU in order to promote the exchange of information.

In a report entitled Vocational Education and Training against Social Exclusion, the foundation urges the countries of central and eastern Europe to pay special attention to training the disadvantaged among young people, the unemployed and minority groups. Further information about the report is available from Tristan McDonald. Tel: +39 11 630 2305; Fax: +39 11 630 2200.
