Cricklade College, Andover, has devised a new way of training in computers with the aid of the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) giving people the opportunity to gain a recognized qualification in office-based PC skills. The college remains open 12 hours a day, six days a week to those training for the qualification. It acts in the same way as a drop-in centre, allowing people to train at times to suit themselves and at their own pace) with trainers constantly in attendance. With 900 people taking different modules within the qualification, the centre is growing rapidly. On average, a further 40 people enrol each week. To date, more than 200 people have passed all seven modules and gained the qualification.
ECDL, the internationally-recognized PC-skills qualification promoted by the British Computer Society, was chosen because the syllabus deals with the basic skills required to use computing technology effectively. It also matched the requirements of local businesses.
