Mencap has developed an award to encourage development of the essential skills that the over-16s with a learning difficulty need to live their lives with greater independence, choice and respect. The Essential Skills award will help to remedy many of the current problems in further education for people with a learning difficulty by shifting the emphasis from academic goals to improved competency in skills that are applicable to their daily lives. They include personal care and presentation, community and leisure, and practical and vocational skills. They can be taught anywhere that people with a learning difficulty live, work or learn.
The award includes a curriculum framework, guidance for managers and programme planners, instructions for teachers and supporters, activities for students, and supporting documentation. Further information is available from Margaret Reader, professional development manager for Mencap National College. Tel: +44 1209 831923.
