Britain trails on proportion of 18-year-olds in education
Britain has the lowest percentage of 18-year-olds in the European Union who remain in the education system, according to a report by Euorstat, the EU statistics organization. Education in Europe: Key Statistics 2000-01reveals that 55 per cent of British 18-year olds remain in education. The highest percentages are in Sweden (95 per cent), Finland (89 per cent) and Belgium (85 per cent). The EU average is 71 per cent. The report indicates that,across the EU as a whole, more women (74 per cent) than men (69 per cent) remain in education at the age of 18. The proportion of mathematics, science and technology graduates among 20-29 year-olds is highest in Ireland, France,Britain and Finland, and lowest in Belgium, Denmark, Spain and Sweden.
