The internationalization of education is a reality, Jan Figel, European Commissioner responsible for education and training, said at a meeting of the G8 education ministers in Moscow.

Mr Figel said: “The Erasmus programme is now a by-word for international mobility in education, and partners in other countries are increasingly looking to see what they can learn from European education co-operation. People moving abroad to work should have their qualifications recognized, so that they can build real careers while contributing as fully as possible to the host country’s economy and society.”

The ministers looked at the role of education in relation to: building innovative societies; developing skills for life and work; advancing the education for all agenda; and empowering migrants.
