Economies of scale

Keywords BCIS,Building, Project

Pricing levels on a £1 million project are some 12 per cent lower than on a £100,000 project, according to the BCIS Study of Pricing Adjustment Factors published recently in the BCIS Surveys of Tender Prices[1].

Analysis of the effect of the size of a contract on pricing levels of a building shows that prices fall as the size of a contract increases. Indeed, Figure 1 shows that pricing levels fall quite sharply between a £100,000 project and a £1 million project, the latter being some 12 per cent lower than the former. As the contract size increases further, the effect on pricing levels becomes less noticeable with a £5 million project likely to have pricing levels some 9 per cent below that of a £1 million project.
