New office design online Web site launchKeywords: Office design, Facilities managers, Web site, Design management

A new interactive Web site was launched in Edinburgh recently by business furniture specialists Select Office. Selectfurniture.co.uk incorporates Select's new "PLANIT" software, which enables users to design and create their own office or business environment online. The program has taken almost a year to develop and is believed to be an industry first in online design technology.

Design packages like this are normally too expensive or complicated for most businesses and are generally only used by large organisations and design consultants. A simplified version of CAD, PLANIT will allow the user to create a space into which they can drag and drop images from an extensive library of shapes. The completed plan can then be faxed to Select who will match this up with a database and send back project costs from the growing number of European furniture manufacturers represented on their site.

"This is just going one step further to making things easier for the client" comments Select's managing director Alan O'Connor, who over the past decade has created office environments for literally hundreds of organisations throughout the UK. PLANIT is a really useful tool, which anyone involved in how an office might look, can use. It's very simple to use and requires little or no training.

"Even larger corporate clients will benefit allowing them to create plans in minutes rather than hours. Facilities management people could be e-mailing a department head with proposed layouts within an hour of discussing their requirements. Select are fairly confident people will master the technique in the time it takes to have a morning coffee but will continue to advise clients by the more conventional method devised by the great Alexander Graham Bell."
