In the heady early sixties, space planning was invented. Three factors distinguished the new service from contemporary architecture and interior design: space planning put the customer first; space planning concerned itself not just with one new building or one interior job but with the planning of multiple spaces, the whole stock of buildings, present or future, owned or leased by the client; above all space planning discovered time, especially in the sense of keeping up with rapidly changing organisational needs.
