Purpose

This paper aims to examine the maintenance requirements and methodologies for building information modelling (BIM) infrastructures to provide a framework for their upkeep.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was executed as a positivist inquiry, focusing on construction businesses in Nigeria that possess some form of BIM infrastructure. A five-point Likert scale was used for the questionnaire survey, and the data obtained from respondents were analysed by mean score analysis.

Findings

This study determined that allocating time and resources to sustain BIM infrastructures can result in more efficient and effective utilization of these technologies over time. The research indicated that the expenses associated with rectifying defects and enhancing software performance are the primary determinants influencing maintenance costs for BIM infrastructures.

Research limitations/implications

This study has implications for assessing the efficacy and efficiency of various maintenance strategies for BIM infrastructures, as well as for examining the influence of frequent BIM skill updates on overall project results and success rates within organizations.

Practical implications

This study emphasizes the critical maintenance tasks of bug-fixing and optimizing BIM software, which are essential for the smooth and effective operation of the program. The study’s findings suggest that organizations prioritize the enhancement of employee skills over investment in new BIM hardware, as neglecting employee development may lead to increased errors and downtime and ultimately impede the overall success of the organization’s BIM infrastructure.

Originality/value

This study is distinctive, as it highlights the significance of BIM infrastructural maintenance due to the scarcity of knowledge on the maintenance requirements and methodologies for BIM infrastructures.
