Gas Cooling guide

Keywords Air-conditioning, Coolants, Gas

The USA and Japan have used gas cooling technology for refrigeration, industrial cooling and air-conditioning for the last 40 years. It can deliver cost savings of up to 45 per cent over equivalent electric systems and emits around 50 per cent less carbon dioxide (CO2), yet it is almost unheard of in the UK. Information on how sites can benefit from this technology is in a new Gas Cooling guide produced by Transco Market Development.

Gas-powered cooling is a viable alternative, offering low energy costs and environmental benefits. It has many applications throughout commerce and industry, including in offices, restaurants, shopping malls, hospitals, leisure centres and industrial processes.

The guide details a range of applications including: comfort cooling for air-conditioning and chilled water; process cooling in industrial applications; dehumidification to maintain product quality; and refrigeration to cool products in temperatures near zero or below. The guide features in-depth case studies of how some users are already benefiting from gas cooling including Fisherman's Friend Lozenges, BBC TV Centre, and the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Typically, with an electric-to-gas price ratio of 5:1, a gas-fired double-effect absorption chiller can deliver 45 per cent running cost savings over an equivalent electric cooling system. In addition, it has lower maintenance costs, as the chillers have fewer moving parts to go wrong. Environmentally, the systems do not use harmful refrigerants and emit lower levels of carbon dioxide and other gases that cause acid rain and other pollution. Gas cooling equipment can emit around 50 per cent less CO2 per KW cooling capacity over its lifetime.

"Gas cooling systems are a tried and tested technology with over 40 years' operating experience in the USA and Japan, where around 50 per cent of new large buildings use this technology",says Laurence Wade, business development manager at Transco. "The UK is not selecting gas cooling because of a lack of information, and that is what Transco's Gas Cooling guide will help overcome."
