The ET Partnership has launched a comprehensive awards scheme - to be presented during the ET2000 exhibition (6-8 June 2000) - as a key activity during UK Environment Week (5-11 June 2000). The awards are designed to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of those companies and organisations setting standards in environmental innovation and good practice. Entry is open to all exhibitors at ET2000 and will be assessed by an independent judging panel. The awards ceremony takes place on 7 June 2000 at the Burlington Hotel,Birmingham.

The awards will consist of seven categories focusing on key areas of the environmental technology industry. Each category is available for individual sponsorship and the ET Partnership is currently in talks with interested parties.

The ET2000 Sustainable Development Award will recognise those companies that achieve economic development to secure rising standards of living, but which also protect and enhance the future global environment. This award acknowledges the companies broadening their eco-efficiency to include consumption, product life-cycle plus the wider social and ethical issues raised by their role in the community.

Products launched into the environmental market are increasingly required to set new standards in environmental effectiveness and demonstrate environmental sustainability in design, manufacture, use and after use, effect on the local community etc. The ET2000 Product Innovation Award will acknowledge two aspects of innovation - the environmental benefits resulting from their use and their sustainability as products in their own right.

New technology and processes are the driving force behind an industry that not only has to comply with increasing legislation, but at the same time remain competitive. The ET2000 Environmental Research and Development Award recognises the vital role research plays in the development of the environmental industry.

Covering all areas of the waste industry - from waste minimisation, re-use and recycling to energy from waste and landfill - The ET2000 Waste Management Achievement Award will recognise innovative solutions to tackling waste issues at a global and local level, as an inspiration to both local government and the waste industry.

The ET2000 Export Achievement Award will be presented to the company judged to have significantly increased export earnings to a level considered outstanding for the size of the applicant. The award will focus on products and services or turnkey consultancy/operations and maintenance projects used or applied in manufacturing, water and sewage industry or the waste management sector.

Moves to deregulate the supply of water and sewage treatment services plus efforts to improve water resources management have prompted a shake-up in the water industry. Traditional water suppliers are facing increasing competition while the water companies, in turn, are responding proactively. The ET 2000 Water Customer Efficiency and Choice Award will recognise the efforts of all three groups in achieving the most cost-effective use of water and sewage services for the customer.

The ET2000 Award of Distinction will be presented to the company or organisation that the judges feel has contributed to the principles of sustainable development over and above the demands of its publics.
