Recent concerns, raised by the National Audit Office, over deaths in hospitals, caused by Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) have prompted Rentokil Hygiene to relaunch its Air Hygiene Unit as an effective means of saving lives.

The unit uses ultra-violet light and has proved very effective against all forms of airborne pathogens in MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) approved tests. A two-week trial reduced total bacterial count from a peak of 8,400 per cubic metre of air to just 20.

Mike Lothian, responsible for Hygiene Research and Development at Rentokil Initial, describes the unit as a "highly effective way of combating the spread of infection in hospital environments. In light of recent news coverage,some strains of bacteria, including MRSA (Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) have built up a resistance and have become immune to traditional antibiotics. Ultra-violet light will destroy these 'superbugs' which are said to be responsible for serious and often fatal illnesses in hospitals."

Robin Sadler, general manager, Rentokil Hygiene, concludes: "Our units not only have the potential to save lives but also vast sums of money. The NHS already spends £1 billion a year combating the problem."
