The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has just published a newly updated and significantly expanded edition of Guide C: Reference Data, which offers all the core data building services design calculations are based on. Although basic physical data does not change with time, the refinement of measurement and calculation techniques means that even this basic data needs to be reviewed and updated. The 2001 edition of Guide Cincludes a vastly improved body of information in easy-to-follow tables and graphs, making the data accessible for all professionals.

The new guide is made up of six sections:

  • 1.

    properties of humid air;

  • 2.

    properties of water and steam;

  • 3.

    heat transfer;

  • 4.

    flow of fluids in pipes and ducts;

  • 5.

    fuels and combustion; and

  • 6.

    units, standards and mathematical data.

Each of the sections has been reviewed, and some have been completely rewritten to include new information and address current issues. This includes details on synthetic pipes as well as traditional types, ductwork sizing that takes into consideration Part L of the Building Regulations' requirements on fan energy usage, and extra material to cover the wider range of fuels in use today.

Guide C is priced at £50 for CIBSE members and £100 for non-members. To order your copy contact the CIBSE. Tel: +44 (0) 20 8772 3618;Fax: +44 (0) 20 8675 6554; or Web site at: www.cibse.org
