The Society of Light and Lighting has published a new guide to surface reflectance and colour which enables lighting designers to assess much more accurately than hitherto the reflectances of the various surfaces in the space to be lit.
Surface reflectance is an important factor in lighting calculations, yet accurate information is rarely available. The new Lighting Guide 11includes specially printed and calibrated colour sample cards to enable designers to assess the reflectances of the various room surfaces quickly and accurately.
This publication will therefore be of use to a wide range of professionals including architects, interior designers, lighting consultants, contractors and facilities managers.
Copies of Lighting Guide 11: Surface Reflectance and Colour. Its Specification and Measurement for Designers cost £58. They can be obtained from the CIBSE Bookshop at 222 Balham High Road, London SW12 9BS, UK. Tel: +44 (0)20 8772 3690; Fax: +44 (0)20 8676 5549 (payment with orders); Web site: www.cibse.org
Replacement reflectance sample cards will also be available separately, price£30.
This publication has been produced by the Society of Light and Lighting in conjunction with the National Physical Laboratory as part of the work of the NPL Optical Radiation Measurement Club. Measurements and calibration of the sample cards were carried out by NPL. The National Physical Laboratory is the UK's national standards laboratory. NPL provides important measurement services to government, industry and ultimately every member of the UK public.
Society announces masterclasses
The Society of Light and Lighting is the senior professional body in the UK representing the interests of those involved in the art, science and engineering of light and lighting in their widest definitions. It offers authoritative publications, professional recognition and a wide range of learned society activities. It is part of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.
In his presidential address, Mike Simpson announced the key strategies for the Society of Light and Lighting over the coming two years. One of these was to increase the society's activities in the regions by organising lighting events outside of its usual London programme.
It has therefore announced that a series of lighting masterclasses will be held with the theme of "sustainable lighting". This recognises the need for lighting to offer the best possible value to clients whilst embodying good lighting design.
The masterclasses will draw on the experience of practising designers and engineers through the use of case studies.
They will also cover the new lighting requirements of Part L of the building regulations which set new challenges for the designer in meeting what are tougher but nonetheless realistic energy targets. These masterclasses are not only aimed at those directly involved in lighting. Other professions including facilities managers and developers are encouraged to attend.
For more details of the events please contact the society secretary. Tel: +44(0)20 8772 3622; Fax: +44(0)20 8673 3302; E-mail: sll@cibse.org,or look at the Society of Light and Light section of the CIBSE Web site: www.cibse.org
