In a neat book of 200 pages, Cambridge historian Brendan Simms recounts the epic of Sunday, 18 June 1815, when a determined force of fewer than 400 infantrymen held off an enemy many times stronger and tipped the battle of Waterloo in favor of the Duke of Wellington and his European allies. The volume is titled The Longest Afternoon (Simms, 2015) and reconstructs in tactical detail the resistance and resilience of the 2d Light Battalion, German Legion of the British Army.
