FROM libraries of three thousand or thirty thousand books it is perhaps an effort to imagine one of over three millions. Librarians of great institutions have something better to do than to count their books, and no exact figures are known; but that is about the size of the British Museum Library. France, the United States, and now Russia, have national libraries of about this size, but of the four our's and the French are by far the most valuable.
