“AUTHORITIES”—the men or women who know more than all save one or two persons in the country, perhaps in the world, about some topic, be it nuclear contamination or the Navajo Indians—are a modern phenomenon. In proliferating sciences and learning in general, they stand out as guides and advisers to us in our ignorance. Like us, they are as ignorant of fields outside their own as they are magisterial in delivering judgment within their speciality.
