The new Central Library in Dundee is part of a large shopping development which has replaced the Wellgate, one of Dundee's oldest thoroughfares. The main entrance to the library from Victoria Road gives the building its own individuality, but there is also a shop entrance in one of three shopping malls. Therefore the library, impressive though it is, does not occupy its own site—it is part of a much larger development, and that is the main reason why it came into being during a difficult period of financial restraint.
