The numbers and prices of journals have been increasing while library budgets have remained stable or slowly decreased. The situation at the University of Ilorin Library in Nigeria is discussed where, following a period of relative stagnation, the Library journals budget could no longer absorb existing commitments. The effects of Nigeria′s Structural Adjustment Programme are also indicated and the need for cuts explained. The steps taken during the journal cancellation exercise are discussed and the benefits and problems identified.
