Purpose

Highly cited papers hold scientific importance in the scientific community as they receive a substantial number of citations within a limited timeframe, thereby contributing to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields.

Design/methodology/approach

This study aimed to investigate the highly cited papers in the field of pathological biomineralization. The Science Citation Index-Expanded in the Web of Science Database was used for data collection. Various parameters, such as research trends, authors, institutions, countries, journals, scientific collaboration networks and their thematic maps, were extracted and analyzed by using HistCite, VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R Package software.

Findings

The findings revealed that 26 countries played a significant role in publishing highly cited papers in this field, with America and Europe continents being the primary contributors. The USA and the UK emerged as scientific leaders on these two continents in terms of publishing highly cited papers, and 95% of them were published with multiauthors. In addition, over 80% of these articles were published in Q1 journals, while nearly 12% were published in Q2 journals.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable insights into the characteristics of highly cited papers, scientific collaboration pattern and pioneers in domain.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the inaugural investigation into the research trends, leading contributors, motivations and features of highly cited articles in the realm of pathological biomineralization, using bibliometric analysis. This in-depth overview enhances the understanding of the field’s evolution and its potential practical implications.
