Purpose

This study aims to identify the factors influencing the adoption of e-learning in libraries. It also aimed to reveal the barriers associated with e-learning-based systems in academic libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review (SLR) was applied to conduct the study. A total of 25 studies were selected to conduct the study. Required literature was retrieved through 14 different digital databases.

Findings

The findings of the study manifested that factors of educational opportunities, innovation, flexibility, customization and service delivery influenced the adoption of e-learning in libraries. Results also revealed that technological challenges, skills challenges, organizational challenges, infrastructure challenges and operational challenges cause barriers for the successful adoption and integration of e-learning-based library services.

Originality/value

The study has provided theoretical implications for future investigators by adding valuable literature to the existing body of knowledge. It has also offered framework for management bodies to effectively implement e-learning tools in library settings. The paper is expected to serve as a benchmark for library leadership to refine the information systems in educational institutes.
