This research study aims to highlight the innovation of wearable medical devices (WMDs) and their expanding role in advancing precision medicine within the healthcare sector. The study focuses on exploring physicians’ perceptions regarding security, confidentiality and their satisfaction with the accuracy of data collected from WMDs.
Using a five-round Delphi method, the study engaged a panel of 19 experts and conducted a survey as well as a set of semi-structured interviews to gather insights and achieve consensus for the survey items before launching a large-scale physician survey.
WMDs provide valuable real-time insights by continuously monitoring vital signs such as electrocardiography, blood oxygen saturation, movement and sleep patterns – crucial for managing chronic diseases and encouraging healthier lifestyles. Despite recognizing the potential of WMDs, physicians remain concerned about the confidentiality and integrity of patient data due to the lack of transparency from manufacturers about associated risks and incidents of device hacking.
The findings suggest that to support wider adoption of WMDs in healthcare, manufacturers and regulatory bodies must prioritize improving data security and transparency. Enhancing the accuracy of collected data and clearly communicating the safeguards in place can strengthen physicians’ trust and facilitate the integration of WMDs into routine care, especially for managing chronic conditions.
This study contributes original insights into the relatively underexplored area of physician attitudes toward WMDs in the context of data integrity and security. It underscores the importance of physician trust in data accuracy and device transparency as key drivers of adoption, offering valuable guidance for developers, policymakers and healthcare organizations aiming to leverage WMDs for precision medicine.
