This study, conducted by two teachers in the areas of management and computer information systems, evolved because of the number of current articles that indicate that corporations began to use computers and new technology before safeguards were developed and in place regarding their use. Not having the control function in place has caused dire consequences for many companies. The research was limited to control of personal use of computers, controlling e‐mail accounts, and securing company data. In addition to library research, over 200 companies in a four‐states area in the south (USA) were surveyed. The results reinforced the need for better control in a majority of companies, the need for company policies regarding personal use of the computer, and more monitoring to prevent suits in the areas of harassment, libel, race discrimination, etc.
